Goggles, swim cap and an optional nose clip remove 90% of a beginner's discomfort in water.

Practice checklist

  • 1Fit goggles above the cheekbone — press gently, they should hold for 2 seconds without the strap.
  • 2Wear the swim cap from forehead to nape to keep hair out of your eyes.
  • 3Try a nose clip if water entering the nose makes you panic.
  • 4Choose swimwear that stays in place when you push off the wall.

Key tips

  • · Rinse goggles with pool water before wearing to reduce fogging.
  • · Never rub the inside of the lens.

Common mistakes

  • · Strap too tight, creating headaches.
  • · Goggles resting on the eyebrow instead of the eye socket.

Safety note

Always enter the shallow end where you can stand with your head fully above water.

Practice challenge

Wear your full kit and walk one length of the shallow end.

Day 1 Challenge

30 relaxed bubble breaths, then 6 rounds of flutter kick at the wall without standing up mid-round.
